Golds win Post-Christmas Sevens Cup |
Updated 11-Jul-10 |
The Sevens held their Post Christmas Cup Finals Day on Saturday 20th March. 18 teams, which included two from Bantams, completed in either the Plate or Cup competition. Who played in each competition having once again been determined in the Group games With the additional two teams it meant that the early stages of the Plate knockout had to be adapted to determine which teams played who in Plate quarter finals. As a result we started with these games. One of the games involved Cricketers Celts who surprisingly had only finished third in their 4-team Group - they entered the Plate at the quarter final stage where they defeated Nando's Maroons 1-0. Bantams A put up a great performance having won their Plate game before going out on penalties in the quarter finals against Yellow Tigers. The Yellow Tigers then played Greens in one semi-final and Celts played Stripes in the other. Both games were close with Greens winning 1-0 and Celts 2-1. he Plate Final was closely contested with Celts winning 1-0.

Golds played KU Light Blues in one semi-final winning 1-0 and in the other Reds lost 1-0 against Hawks. In the Cup Final neither team could be separated after extra time (1-) and it went to the dreaded penalty shoot-out which Golds won by 2 goals to 1.

The presentation followed and included the School End League Winners, Cricketers Celts and Runner-Up NPH Oranges. The Celts had gone undefeated in the league which had splits into two Divisions after Christmas, however a number of games had been cancelled due to the adverse weather in January (all cancelled games were declared 0-0). The Tudor End Division was won by Greens but only by one point from Reds.
All teams are once again congratulated for the manner they played throughout the second half of the season.
Dark Blues win Pre-Christmas Sevens Cup |

The Sevens held their Cup Finals Day on Saturday 12th December. Eight teams competed in the Plate competition and 8 in the main Cup competition. Who played in each competition having been determined in the Group Games with the first and second placed teams in each group entering the Cup and the remaining two teams in each group entered into the Plate.
The day started with the Quarter Finals which produced the shock result when Yellow Tigers overcame Cricketers Celts 3-0 in the Cup. In the Plate Blue Knights won on penalties against Reds as did Hawks against Golds in the Cup. All four semi-finals were closely contested and Dark Blues and Hawks went into extra time with Thomas Murphy heading the winner in the second half. Kingston University Light Blues defeated Yellow Tigers 2-1 and in the Plate both games ended 1-0 with wins for Red Stripes against Norfolk Plaza Hotel Oranges and Nando's Maroons against Gourmet Burger Kitchen Ambers. The Cup Final ebbed and flowed but it was decided by a goal early in the game when Charlie Garnett for Now Dark Blues struck a ball that the keeper was unable to hold on to. Both sides had chances thereafter but the final score was 1-0. In the Plate Final neither Red Stripes or Nando's Maroons could find the net and the game after finishing 0-0 after extra time went to penalties with Maroons coming out on top.
The presentation followed and included the League Winners, Cricketers Celts and Runner-Up Hawks. The Celts had gone 15 games undefeated in the league which splits into two Divisions after Christmas. They also equalled the record of 50 goals scored by a previous Celts team in 2004-05 season but that team played 3 games more so statistically Cricketers Celts have a better record. (The record in Sevens based on 22 games is 89 scored by Whites in 2002-2003 with an average of over 4 goals per game.)
All teams are to be congratulated for the manner they played.
